FAQs of investment castings

1.What is investment casting?

Investment casting is also called as precision casting, with processes of mould making, wax injection, wax tree assembling, metal melting, pouring, clearin, heat treatment, ect.

2.What are the main differences between investment casting and sand casting?

Investment casting is suitable for small castings from 0.1kg~80kg with high accuracy on dimensions. However,we prefer sand casting process to make bigger parts, which the surface is relatively rough.

3.What materials are commonly used in investment casting process?

Steel:Alloy steel,carbon steel,stainless steel.
Iron:Gray iron,ductile iron.
Aluminum
Brass,Zinc

4.Does lost wax casting belong to investment casting?

Yes,besides lost wax casting, lost foam casting also belongs to investment casting.

5.How long does it usually take to make pattern and samples? How about mass production?

It usually takes 30-40 working days to make pattern and samples. And another 30 working days for mass production after sample is approved.

6.How could Fly foundry ensure good quality of investment castings?

First of all,all the engineers and technicists have rich theory and practice experience in our foundry.Secondly,we will make a strict quality control procedure for each prodution step. When our sample is finished,we will test samples ourselves and size report&material report could also be offered.Beside, sample could also be sent to our customers directly for inspection. If there is any quality problem,we will resend to you until approved.

7.What is the payment terms of Fly foundry for investment casting?

100% payment of tooling cost prepaid with order by T/T,30% payment of production paid by T/T after our sample is approved, balance 70% payment paid once you receive the copy of faxed bill of lading.

8.Except casting process, does Fly foundry also do machining job? Or do the machining from outsurcing factories?

Yes,we could do machining ourselves after casting, detailed information of machining equipments, pls click here.

9.What are the differences between investment castings and die castings?

Investment casting is a casting process for high melting point materials, like steel, iron, ect. However, die casting process could only for low melting point material, like zinc, aluminum.

10.How to improve the roughness of iron castings?

Some iron castings require for high roughness or smoothness. So, we need pay attention on this during casting process.

Click How to improve the roughness of iron castings you can learn more about this.

11.What leads to the deformation of steel castings?

Deformation usually happened on finished steel castings. Then, what leads to the deformation of steel castings? The main reasons are stress left inside casting, structure changing due to heat treating and other unproper design or operation processes during casting. To learn more, you can click "What leads to the deformation of steel castings?"

12.What's the current production costs for investment castings in China?

Production costs for investment castings are changable due to changes on many factors. Currently in China, the costs to produce investment castings are keeping increasing. The inceasing are caused by several reasons, such as raw material costs increasing, labour cost increasing, etc. You can learn more by clicking "Factors that caused the prices increasing on investment castings."

13.What's difference between investment casting and precison casting?

Both precision casting and investment casting are normally heard in the casting industry.  Then, what's difference between investment casting and precison casting? Please click "Difference Between Investment Casting and Precision Casting".
